Shane and Hannah Burcaw are relationship vloggers on a mission to change the way society understands disability. On their YouTube channel, Squirmy and Grubs, which has garnered 780,000+ subscribers and worldwide media attention in its first two years, the couple shares a hilarious and authentic examination of what it’s like to be in an interabled relationship. Shane lives with a form of muscular dystrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. Hannah is able-bodied and provides the majority of Shane’s daily care. Together, they are really no different than any other couple. They argue, they laugh (a lot), and they support each other. But even while posting hundreds of hours of video about their life together—traveling, going on dates, figuring out adulthood—society still has a hard time accepting their love.
Shane Burcaw is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 780,000 subscribers on YouTube. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Together, the couple is writing a YA nonfiction book called INTERABLED (Macmillan Publishing, 2021) which will profile 30 interabled couples to normalize dating with a disability.
