Abstract:

In this deeply personal and impactful session, "Surviving Loss: 3 Reasons Why We Must Discuss Suicide," I share my own journey as a survivor of the devastating loss of my sister to suicide. This session is more than a discourse on statistics and prevention; it's an intimate exploration of the human experience with suicide and the crucial lessons learned from such a profound tragedy.

As we navigate through the session, the first key takeaway emphasizes the alarming reality that our collective future is at risk, with individuals succumbing to the heart-wrenching choice of ending their own lives. Drawing from my own experience, I shed light on the emotional toll and the broader societal implications of such losses.

The conversation extends to recognizing signs and symptoms of someone in distress, leveraging both professional insight and my personal encounters to provide a holistic understanding. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the subtle indicators that might signal a person's struggle with suicidal thoughts.

Central to the session is the recognition that words matter. In sharing my personal narrative, I underscore the impact of language on the perception and discussion of suicide. The session aims to empower attendees to communicate with empathy, fostering an environment where individuals feel heard and understood.

We will also delve into the crucial skill of asking direct questions about suicide, demystifying the discomfort surrounding these conversations. Drawing on my own experience, I offer practical advice on navigating these discussions with sensitivity and openness.

In addition, the session encourages participants to create personalized safety and self-care plans, emphasizing strategies for both individual well-being and supporting others in distress. "Surviving Loss" is not only an exploration of the broader societal challenges surrounding suicide but a personal journey that invites attendees to connect with the human aspect of this complex issue.
